The definition of S_HOSP_U differs by HCUP database:

For the NIS prior to 2012, S_HOSP_U contains the total number of sampled hospitals in the stratum.
For the NIS beginning in 2012, S_HOSP_U contains the total number of hospitals in the stratum.
For the NRD, S_HOSP_U contains the total number of hospitals in the stratum.
For the NEDS, S_HOSP_U contains the total number of sampled hospital-based emergency departments in the stratum.
For the NASS, S_HOSP_U contains the total number of sampled hospitals in the stratum.
