General Notes |
SpannedServiceCount includes the number of spanned services included on the record. For example, if four separate chemotherapy visits are included on one record, then SpannedServiceCount is 4. This data element can be coded on emergency department, ambulatory surgery, and other types of outpatient records. SpannedServiceCount is retained as provided by the data source. Nonnumeric source data are set to invalid (.A). No edit checks are performed on this data element during HCUP processing. |

Maryland SpannedServiceCount equals 1 if there is only one service reported on the record. If SpannedServiceCount is greater than 1, then information on more than one service has been combined on the record. The length of stay identifies the span in time between the first and last service. There is no way to determine which diagnoses or procedures are specific to an individual service. Hospitals in MD are requested to code this data element as follows "Enter the number of encounters or visits billed during the quarter being reported. For recurring or series accounts, enter the number of billed visits. For all other outpatient accounts, enter 1. Do not leave blank or enter 0." |
