For data year 2024, the data element TOTCHG_ED_2024 can be used to produce accurate national estimates of the total hospital charge for treat-and-release emergency department (ED) visits in the 2024 Nationwide Emergency Department Sample (NEDS). TOTCHG_ED_2024 includes two separate adjustments applied to the hospital charge for treat-and-release ED visits in the Western and Midwest regions. The 2024 adjustment is specific to the West and Midwest because the sampling of hospital-owned EDs in those regions is most impacted by the change in available ED data in 2024. Information on hospital charge for ED services for ED visits that result in admission to the same hospital is unavailable (TOTCHG_ED_2024 is missing).
